High Court Judge Syed Refaat Ahmed has taken oath as Bangladesh`s 25th chief justice, a day after Justice Obaidul Hassan resigned from the post.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin Chuppu administered the swearing-in programme in Banga Bhaban 12 on Sunday.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin has appointed the new chief justice in line with Article 95 (1) of the Constitution.
It comes following a deadline set by Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, seeking the appointment of Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed by 6pm on Saturday,
Five more judges of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court resigned from their posts.
The latest appointment would come into effect from the day of his oath of office to be administered by the President, the latter`s Press Secretary Md Joynal Abedin told BSS.
